     The art of weaving has been going on from the prehistoric times onward. The actual weaving started with the taming of the animals, which provided steady supply of wool from sheep, goats, yaks and camels. The motherland of this art is Central Asia.

   What we consider today as source of pleasure was originally woven as utilitarian objects for personal and family use. In nomadic societies women are judged by their talents at home consequently her weavings convey a relatively high quality workmanship. Since these weavings are not objects of commerce they are not influenced by the demands of the market and thus remain authentic.

   Weavings reflect the culture of the society and with their aesthetic merits convey artistic messages to other societies and thus becomes a universal means of expression. When one observes this art in detail, they will appreciate why weaving is considered one of the most beautiful artistic activities. There are few factors that one has to take into consideration in appreciation of textile. The spinning of the wool: to give softness, girth and elasticity to the fibers is gained by skill and it is very time consuming. The dyeing, using elements from plants, animals and minerals and transmuting them into coloring substances is a matter of experience, which comes with years. Artistic skills of the weaver in interpreting designs and motifs, which comprise a language for the women with which their happiness, sorrow and desires are expressed. It is through their weavings that they display the thoughts, which are not considered appropriate to be transformed to words. This is a kind of a communication, a spontaneous proclamation.

   During the last century carpets and kilims became a subject of research due to their rarity and specialty. With the spread of knowledge there is an increasing demand for high quality carpets. Turkish carpets and kilims reflect the historic and hereditary expertise passed through the generations therefore owning a tribal weave is considered as taking a page out of spectacular and overwhelming Anatolian nomadic life.
